My son is in 5th grade and there is a district homework policy of 50 minutes per night. The district states that there is a 50 minute limit but it's not true. The teacher gives him so much homework - and he's struggling, not gifted - that I'm homeschooling him from the time he gets home until he goes to bed. I don't have adequate time to cook a good dinner. I'm getting really annoyed and there's nothing I can do about it, it seems, besides pull him out of public school altogether. I feel like our lives are being robbed by homework.

In regards to your first question (1.	Why do young children (at the tender age of 5 to 8 or 9) get hours and hours of homework every week?) I don't know why they get so much homework! I agree that children need to be well rounded... and yes they need to learn the basics but brining home work every night isn't going to motivate them!

I don't have the option to stay home and teach my kids but I sure would if I could. How can schools afford good teachers when they face so many cut backs? Why is funding for education the first to go? As the song says, "Children are our future, teach them well..."

My daughter used to work on homework, when she was in the 3rd grade, well past bedtime and was so tired all she could do was cry. Learning was killing her too. I'm not sure how a ton of homework is going to help an education. I think my daughter learned more when she was rested and relaxed.
